The "Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling" Collectable Erasers Connection!
The Roddy Piper eraser has come here to chew bubblegum and kick a**, and he's all outta bubblegum. But if he had some, I bet he'd keep in that little purse-looking thingy hanging around his waist. Roddy is one of my favorite figures from this set, solely because, along with Junkyard Dog, he actually looks like his character from the Rock 'n' Wrestling cartoon. That is what this set is supposed to be based on isn't it? Look at the cartoon illustrations of everyone else and then look at their figures, they look nothing alike. While everyone else looks like they're ready to wrestle, and that is probably what kid's buying these things back in the day would've wanted, ol' Roddy here looks like he's content to just stand back and dish out some classic Piper insults. Roddy doesn't really look like he fits in this set, but I think he's great. The folks at Winston Toys captured his cartoon likeness excellently, right down to the spiffy green socks. When I first began collecting, I was told by several collectors that Roddy may not even exist. He, along with Wendi and JYD hadn't been seen on the internet before. Sure they're featured on the back of the packaging, but that didn't necessarily mean that they were produced. Then, in late 1999 I think it was, I came across him on eBay, in an auction with 3 other erasers: Iron Sheik, Hogan with arms up, and the super-rare Superfly with one arm down. I won the auction for a whopping $12. I don't even think anyone else bid against me. I definitely wouldn't get by with that today, but there just didn't seem to be much of a demand at all for these guys back then. So, with the winning of that auction I had completed half the set and more importantly confirmed the existence of an eraser who was previously believed to most likely be a mere figment of collectors' imaginations. Now that Roddy was discovered, it assured my belief that Wendi and JYD had to be out there somewhere.
